An Oregon Man Was Wrongly Imprisoned for Almost a Year Because of an Error in a DMV Database

The DMV of Oregon has mislabeled at least 3,000 licenses as indefinitely suspended and, while they were aware of the issue, it was not understood with enough urgency to fix it, leading to at least five wrongful arrests or convictions; when the holders of the incorrectly labeled licenses were released from prison or jail, they didn't provide the DMV with the necessary documentation to credit them with completed prison sentences for essentially permanently suspended licenses listed in the database as being suspended until "12/31/9999" or "00/00/0000," meaning they were likely to be arrested for driving with suspended licenses, even if the actual tenure of their suspension was over.
